How a Cacao Ceremony Opens the Heart, Heals, and Connects

Are you searching for a transformative experience that can bring balance and inner peace to your life? Look no further than a cacao ceremony. Originating from ancient Mayan and Aztec traditions, the cacao ceremony is a sacred ritual that harnesses the healing properties of cacao to facilitate emotional, mental, and spiritual growth. In this article, I will share with you how I offer cacao ceremonies, the extensive benefits, how to prepare for your ceremony, and what you can expect during your unique and uplifting experience.

What is a Cacao Ceremony?

The cacao ceremonies that I offer are held in a safe space, participants come together and we drink ceremonial grade cacao. Cacao, the raw form of chocolate, has been used for centuries as a sacred plant medicine and is revered for its heart-opening properties. During my cacao ceremonies, I focus on honouring the cacao medicine, setting intentions, inner reflection, and connecting with oneself and others in a deep and meaningful way. I bring through the wisdom I have gained from spending months with South American Brazilian shamans and the experiences I captured from spending time with indigenous Mayan tribes in Guatemala.

What are the Benefits of a Cacao Ceremony?

  • Heart Opening: Cacao has natural mood-enhancing qualities that can open your heart and allow you to experience feelings of love, joy, happiness, and connection. It can help release emotional blockages and facilitate healing on a deep emotional level.
  • Enhanced Awareness: The active components in ceremonial cacao, such as theobromine and phenethylamine increase blood flow to your brain, leading to heightened awareness, clarity, and focus. This can aid in introspection, self-reflection, and gaining insights into your life’s challenges and aspirations.
  • Emotional Healing: Cacao contains anandamide, often referred to as the “bliss molecule,” which can promote feelings of happiness and reduce anxiety. It can support emotional healing by bringing buried emotions to the surface, allowing you to process and release them in a safe and supported space.
  • Spiritual Connection: The sacred nature of the cacao ceremony provides an opportunity for spiritual exploration and connection. The combination of cacao’s medicinal properties and the ceremonial setting can facilitate a deeper connection with yourself, others, and the divine, allowing for profound spiritual experiences.
  • Stress Reduction: Cacao contains theobromine, phenylethylamine, anandamine, tryptophan and magnesium, all of which induce relaxation and reduce stress. During the cacao ceremonies I offer, you can experience a sense of calm relaxation, softness and the feeling of being fully held and supported.

What Can I Expect During a Cacao Ceremony?

Every cacao ceremony is unique, depending on the theme, the intention of the ceremony and the group energy on the day. However, there are common elements you can expect during the cacao ceremonies that I offer:

  • Opening Ritual: I usually begin with an opening ritual, which may involve smudging with sacred herbs, setting intentions, giving thanks to the earth and nature, and creating a sacred space. This sets the energetic tone for our ceremony.
  • Cacao Preparation and Blessing: I prepare the cacao drink with love and intention, using ceremonial grade cacao from Guatemala. I bless the cacao and its Spirit is invoked, honouring its healing properties and ensuring an authentic and potent experience.
  • Cacao Consumption: You will be invited to drink the cacao mindfully, savouring each sip and connecting with the Spirit of the cacao. I may guide a meditation or lead you through heart-opening exercises depending on the groups needs.
  • Inner Journey: As the cacao medicine begins to take effect, you may be encouraged to close your eyes, go inward, and explore your thoughts, emotions, and sensations. I provide a safe container for deep introspection and healing.
  • Sharing and Integration: Towards the end of the ceremony, you are often invited to share your experiences if you feel called to do so (not essential). This sharing allows for integration and collective support in the healing process.
  • Closing Ritual: I conclude the cacao ceremony with a closing ritual, which may involve gratitude practices, blessings, or a group meditation. This helps to seal the energy and honour the transformational journey undertaken during the ceremony.

How Should I Prepare for a Cacao Ceremony?

Participating in a cacao ceremony is a beautiful and transformative experience that can be enhanced by a few simple preparations. While anyone can participate anytime, taking some time to prepare yourself physically, emotionally, and mentally can help you fully immerse in the ceremony and receive its maximum benefits. Here are some suggestions for preparation:
  • Diet: It’s recommended to avoid consuming heavy meals at least two hours before the ceremony to allow the cacao to be absorbed effectively. Additionally, it’s best to avoid caffeine and stimulants on the day of the ceremony, as they may interfere with the subtle effects of cacao. Avoiding dairy on the day of the ceremony, the enzymes can inhibit some of the cacao’s medicinal compounds. Opt for light, nourishing foods that support your well-being. Hydrating with water.
  • Clothing: Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes that allow for easy movement and breathability. Light and natural fabrics can enhance the comfort and flow of energy during the ceremony.
  • Emotional Preparation: Take some time to reflect on your intentions for the ceremony. Consider what you would like to release, heal, or invite into your life. Create a sacred space within yourself and approach the ceremony with an open mind and an open heart. Setting clear intentions and being present in the moment can enhance the depth of your experience.
  • Arrival: Arrive at the cacao ceremony with an open and receptive mindset. Embrace the opportunity for self-exploration, healing, and connection. Trust the process and surrender to the wisdom of the cacao and my guidance.
  • Lower Dose: Cacao is advised in lower doses if you are pregnant, have a brain or heart condition, epilepsy, taking SSRI medication, liver failure or kidney stones. You know your body more than anyone, listen and ask yourself what feels good for you.
